Signed into law on August 10, 2022, the PACT Act is the largest expansion of Veteran health care and benefits in generations. It will benefit millions of Veterans of the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and post-9/11 eras who were exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxins while serving our country – and their survivors. During the month of July, VA is hosting a nationwide Summer VetFest, where local VA facilities will host events to inform Veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors about the PACT Act and encourage them to apply for the health care and benefits they have earned. Retired Navy Veteran and Rear Adm. Babette (Bette) Bolivar served in the U.S. Navy for more than 35 years, becoming one of the first Filipino Americans to graduate from the United States Naval Academy and one of the first women to become a diver with the Navy. Bolivar grew up in Hawaii, and her father was a retired U.S. Navy sailor. She developed a fear of the water when she almost drowned at age eight but said in a 2016 interview that, “from then on, [she] told [herself] [she] would conquer both the seas and [her] fear of the seas by learning more and becoming part of the underwater environment.” [From VA News]

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate and honor the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, but also reflect on the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive and accepting society. At VA, we ensure that all Veterans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have access to the benefits and support they have earned. VA’s recent expansion in survivor benefits to same-sex spouses/partners of Veterans reflects this commitment. [From VA News]
