All Veterans face unique challenges when returning home and transitioning back to civilian life, and our mental health professionals—psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and more—are integral to empowering Veterans to take charge of their wellbeing and pursue fuller lives. Veterans from diverse backgrounds may face additional challenges and stigmas with regard to mental health. VA’s Center for Minority Veterans (CMV) and Center for Women Veterans (CWV) held a hybrid event on June 18 to mark Juneteenth at VA headquarters in Washington, D.C. For the event, Army Veteran Stephanie Merlo sat down with retired Army General Dr. Linda Singh and Anthony Woods, secretary, Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, for a conversation on the nature of our Nation’s ancestral roots and the history of Juneteenth. “I have been thinking a lot about suicide,” said the Veteran, not making much eye contact. Unlike in past discussions, on this day he had a plan and access to lethal means. He had dealt with distress and thoughts of suicide most of his life—a life that included hiding that he was gay and coping with childhood sexual abuse and military sexual trauma. [From VA News]

VA is bringing health care and other benefits to Native American Veterans living in the highly rural areas of the Grand Canyon State. Joshua Wear, a Rural Health coordinator with Northern Arizona VA, which provides services to about 34,000 Veterans over an area of more than 65,000 square miles, leads a team of VA personnel who frequently travel to remote areas to provide rural and Native Veterans VA resources that are normally harder for them to access.
