Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Irene Halfman LaFever, who served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. When the U.S. entered World War II in December 1941, the military drafted most available men. On the home front in Lowell, Iowa, Irene Halfman LaFever took on work in a factory where she packed lead arsenic powder to support the war effort. [From VAntage Point]

During Hispanic Heritage Month, today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Sandra Cancinos, who served as a helicopter door gunner in Afghanistan and Iraq. Sandra Cancinos enlisted in the Army in 2005 and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. In an interview with the Veterans History Project, she said that basic training gave her discipline and introduced her to one of her best friends, who she remains in contact with today.
