Richenda A. Hoffman was born April 11, 1908, in Dunkirk, New York. She was the third of four daughters born to L.N. and Lousia Gansworth. As a young adult, Hoffman worked at Petersen-Harned-Von Maur in Davenport, Iowa. In early 1943, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and completed basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, with further training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Marguerite Erixon Cain was born to Gustav and Ethel Erixon in Denver, Colorado, on Feb. 8, 1921. After high school, she enrolled at the Colorado State College of Education (now University of Northern Colorado), where she began training for a career as a teacher in business education. World War II disrupted Cain’s plans, however, and she became the first woman from her town to swear into the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). [From VA News]
