Practicing mindfulness may seem out of reach to those who are not very experienced with its techniques. Maybe you have heard of the benefits of slowing down and bringing attention to one moment, the here and now. Many people feel that when they practice mindful behavior, they are less reactive to stresses in their lives, that they feel more calm and more in control. [From VA News]

Diana Beatriz Borrero de Padro was born in Puerto Rico in 1946. She enlisted in the Army in 1978 and served for four years, with rotations at Fort Hood, TX, and at Fort Clayton, Panama. After leaving the Army in 1982, she eventually married and had two sons. [From VA News]

This month’s Book Corner author is Navy Veteran Jasmine Rush, who served as an Aviation Boatswains Mate Handler from 2000-2004. She wrote, “Help Me Tell, Finding Your Voice After Trauma.” She was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, and has sought to educate others on adolescent mental health while encouraging children and young adults to not be afraid to use their voice. Recently, VA joined Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) live on Facebook to discuss PACT Act benefits eligibility, who is impacted and what Veterans need to do now. You can watch the full conversation here. August 9 marked the one year anniversary of the passage of the PACT Act, the new law expanding VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. Sarah Rosetta Wakeman was a woman who served under the name Lyons Wakeman in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born in Afton, New York, on Jan. 16, 1843, she was one of nine children raised on the family’s farm. Wakeman moved to Chicago, passing as a man in 1862, to work as a boatman. [From VA News]

Until 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30, 2023, Veterans who deployed to a combat zone, never enrolled in VA health care and left the military between Sept. 11, 2001, and Oct. 1, 2013, are eligible to enroll directly in VA health care through the PACT Act. This special enrollment period gives Veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and other combat zones an opportunity to enroll directly in VA health care without first applying for disability compensation benefits. VA encourages all of these Veterans to visit VA.gov/PACT or call 1-800-MYVA411 to learn more and sign up for VA health care before the deadline. [From VA News]

At VA, safety and inclusivity are driving factors as we strive to provide equidiv health care for all Veterans. This month, VA places a special focus on women service members as we acknowledge Women’s Equality Day Aug. 26. This date marks the celebration of the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment which allowed women the right to vote in the United States. [From VA News]

Mary Louise Castro was born on Nov. 26, 1917. She became the first Mexican-American woman from San Antonio to serve in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II, in the Signal Corps. After her service in the WAC, Castro worked as a Department of the Army civilian, eventually completing 34 years of government service [From VA News]
