Did you know all GI Bill® students who receive monthly education benefit payments are required to verify their enrollment each month? There are four enrollment verification methods available to all students: text, email, online through AskVA, or by phone. Students who choose to verify via text will receive Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) enrollment verification messages via text. Visit the VA.gov enrollment verification webpages to learn more: Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30), and Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) can visit the Verify Your School Enrollment webpage to learn more about enrollment verification options. Post 9/11 GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill students also have the option to verify their enrollment through an online tool. This option is not available to those using transferred benefits at this time. Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA or Chapter 35) program and Fry Scholarship students can visit the Verify School Enrollment For DEA Benefits webpage to learn more about enrollment verification options. In August 1945, the United States ended World War II by detonating atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which led to the Veterans Administration using nuclear technology for medical research beginning in 1947 under Dr. George M. Lyon. By the 1950s, VA hospitals were increasingly utilizing radioisotopes for medical research and treatment, culminating in the creation of a Nuclear Medicine Service in 1966 to coordinate clinical applications. In the early 1960s, the Omaha VA hospital emerged as one of the centers of radioisotope research and diagnosis thanks to the nuclear reactor buried in its basement. Dr. Rosalyn Yalow’s pioneering work at the Bronx VA hospital earned her the Nobel Prize in 1977, cementing VA’s role as a leader in nuclear medicine. This episode is based on Object 57 in the History of VA in 100 Objects virtual exhibit: department.va.gov/history/100-objects/object-57-va-nuclear-reactor/ To learn more about this object or other stories in VA history, visit our website: department.va.gov/history/
