U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis R. McDonough and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack competed in onstage cooking at the 2024 Veteran Food Security Summit held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Crystal City, Virginia, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. VA provided fresh herbs from their new Patriot’s Garden, a hydroponic garden located in the canteen at the VA Central Office, and other fresh produce from VAMC gardens. Each Secretary had assistance from a sous chef, a Veteran, and an executive chef at a VA Medical Center. The event aimed to increase awareness of Federal and community partnerships and resources, highlight the unique needs of Women and rural Veterans, increase the number of facilities participating in activities supporting food security, and highlight quality interventions, innovations, and promising practices in food security.
