Spring 2023

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

SAAM

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the VA has resources for support, coping, and treatment. Did you know the VA has MST (Military Sexual Trauma) Coordinators at each VA to help coordinate your care? Military Sexual Trauma is any unwanted sexual activity that you are involved with against your will. VA has found that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men report experiencing MST.

Coaching Into Care (CIC) can help you navigate these resources, and our coaches can help you have a conversation about seeking mental health treatment.

LEAP for Families

LEAP

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. LEAP was coined by Dr. Xavier Amador who wrote “I’m Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help!” LEAP stands for Listen, Empathize, Agree, Partner. These communication skills can be useful with loved ones who are experiencing a psychotic disorder. CIC coaches can help you have conversations about mental health treatment using these skills.

Learn more about schizophrenia, treatment options, self-help tools, and resources to help Veterans overcome challenges at Make the Connection.

Help CIC develop and evaluate new coaching methods!

This remote study can help you encourage your loved one to get the treatment they need and deserve, through an enhanced telephone coaching program.

  • Does your spouse or partner need help for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
  • Is your loved one a U.S. military Veteran?
  • Are you having a hard time convincing them to get help?

Complete online eligibility screener to see if you are a good fit. Complete online informed consent and initial online assessment. You will speak with a telephone coach over the next 2-3 months and possibly use our study website, which provides brief lessons for how to best care for yourself and help your loved one get mental health treatment. Complete two follow-up online assessments and possibly a telephone interview. All callers to Coaching Into Care are eligible for coaching regardless of study participation.
